Is Bipolar Disorder Genetic?

There are several different types of bipolar disorder including bipolar I, bipolar II, bipolar not otherwise specified (NOS) and cyclothymic disorder (a milder form of bipolar disorder). Bipolar disorder is not always a result of a genetic predisposition.

  1. Genetics

    • According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), "children with a parent or sibling who has bipolar disorder are four to six times more likely to develop the illness, compared with children who do not have a family history of bipolar disorder."

    Idiopathic Bipolar Disorder

    • Idiopathic bipolar disorder is what psychiatrists call the disorder when there is no known cause or genetic history.

    Research

    • Scientists have yet to identify the specific gene that can cause bipolar disorder, but they continue to research genetics and mental illness.

    Identical Twins

    • Since identical twins have the exact same genes, they are perfect research topics. In multiples studies of identical twins with one having bipolar disorder, the other twin does not always have the disorder, according to NIMH. This shows that genetics do not cause all bipolar disorders.

    Treatment

    • Although there is no cure for bipolar disorder, it is manageable with treatment. The most widely used treatment is a combination of psychotherapy and medication.

    Warning

    • If you, or someone you love, becomes preoccupied talking about death and suicide, seek immediate help from a hospital or doctor.
