- Beer can contain wheat, hops, barley, rye, or corn and yeast. Food allergy reactions to these can be as mild as hives or as severe as anaphylaxis. A yeast allergy can also make you tired.
- Some people think they are allergic to beer because their nose becomes congested after consumption. This is probably more likely due to nasal passages dilating and thus causing an increase in mucus production.
- During the fermentation process, histamines can be produced by the yeast. A histamine reaction can be similar to an allergic reaction, as it causes hives, itching, wheezing, sneezing, and red and itchy eyes.
- People suffering from celiac disease are sensitive to gluten found in wheat, rye, and barley, which are all used in making beer. Reactions to gluten consumption easily mistaken for a beer allergy are gastrointestinal upsets, including diarrhea and stomach pain.
- People suffering from the rare beer allergy may also experience swelling of the face, tongue, throat or lips.
