    • An interior decorator must have a good eye for design, color and use of space. They must also keep up with modern decorating trends.

    Working with People

    • An interior decorator must be organized and able to prepare cost estimates and sample boards in a timely fashion.

    Experience

    • Interior decorators hone their skills through experience. Apprenticeships or internships are a good way for a beginning interior decorator to build their portfolio and gain experience.

    Business Aspects

    • Self employed interior decorators need to have a business license. They also need to be able to file taxes, prepare documents and handle other business needs such as advertising.

    Certification

    • Interior decorators can join Certified Interior Decorators International, a professional membership organization. Members must be enrolled in or have completed an accredited interior decorating program and pass an exam before they can be recognized as a certified interior designer.
