Job Description for Certified Nursing Assistant and Home Health Aide

Home health aides generally are nursing assistants or certified nursing assistants. Some educational programs offer a combination of certification for the two positions, since home health aides perform some duties which nursing assistants at hospitals or nursing homes typically do not. The position is commonly referred to as CNA/CHHA.

  1. Health Monitoring

    • The CNA/CHHA visits each patient at the place of residence, observing any changes in behavior or health. This nursing assistant also measures vital signs such as temperature, respiration and blood pressure.

    Nutrition and Medication Records

    • The home health aide documents nutritional and liquid intake as much as possible, and provides reminders to the patient about medication.

    Daily Living Assistance

    • The aide helps the patient with bathing, washing, grooming and dressing. She may prepare food, and assist the patient with eating.

    Housekeeping

    • Light housekeeping is commonly part of the job description for a combination certified nursing assistant and home health aide.

    Companionship

    • Nursing assistants often provide social support and companionship to their clients, who may be completely house-bound and not receive many visitors.

    Information Reporting

    • All information gathered at the visit is finally reported back to the supervising registered nurse at the home health agency.
