What is the Definition of a Part-Time Job?

A part-time job refers to an employment position or job posting wherein fewer hours are put in per week by an individual than a full-time job. Students, elderly citizens and others avail of part-time job opportunities to earn primary incomes. Low-wage workers take up these jobs to supplement primary incomes. Other workers with no full-time jobs also seek part-time jobs. These workers or professionals generally don't enjoy the many employment benefits and rewards that are available to full-time employees.

    • An individual may find part-time employment in a restaurant, retail store, factory, public library, university or call center. These are some of the typical part-time jobs.

    Students

    • Students between ages 17 to 23 are among the largest group of part-time job workers. Many take up these jobs to earn some pocket money whereas others look to pay for their education expenses.

    Weekend Jobs

    • Many individuals also seek part-time weekend jobs to supplement their incomes or voluntarily take up such jobs which match their passions or pursuits outside of their primary employment.

    Second Jobs

    • An individual may take on a second job to augment his income. Second jobs can be full-time or part-time positions.

    Limited Benefits

    • Most part-time jobs don't offer benefits such as health insurance, financial incentives, or stock options.
