Requirements for Dual Citizenship

Dual citizenship is when a person is a citizen of two countries at the same time. Because of the advantages to dual citizenship, many people are opting to go through the process.

  1. Considerations

    • In order to have dual citizenship, you must first research the country where you wish to become a citizen to see if they allow it. Along with their required documents, you will need your birth certificate, a marriage license (if your name has changed) and possibly a current United States passport.

    Laws of Descent

    • Israel, Ireland, Italy and Greece all have laws of descent. While these laws vary, if you have parents, grandparents or great-grandparents who were born in one of these countries, you can become a citizen.

    Benefits

    • Dual citizenship in a European Union country opens the door to vast opportunities. You can travel, work and live in any European Union country with relatively few restrictions.

    Considerations

    • By becoming a citizen of another country, you may be required to pay certain taxes, serve in the military and, in some instances, vote in general elections.

    Identification

    • Countries that do not allow dual citizenship include China, Denmark, Honduras, India, Korea, Kuwait, Mexico, Norway, Singapore and South Africa. If you are a citizen in one of these countries, you cannot become a citizen in another country without renouncing your original citizenship.
