What Careers Have the Highest Salaries?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the highest-paying occupations are composed mainly of medical careers. Careers in law, engineering and flying make up the remainder of the highest-paying occupations.

  1. Medical

    • Surgeons typically are the highest paid in the medical field, with more than $200,000 annually. The salary, however, comes with added pressure knowing that their work determines the life or death of their patients. The most common medical career is that of a primary care physician, a general practitioner who performs routine medical checks on patients to ensure they are living a healthy life. Another prevalent field of medicine is psychiatry. A career as a psychiatrist can result in an annual salary of $154,000. The main duties of a psychiatrist consist of diagnosing mental illnesses and providing treatment. The average salary for the medical profession in general is more than $150,000 annually.

    Law

    • The law field offers occupations including arbitrator, court reporter, judge, paralegal and title examiner. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary of workers in this field is $102,470 annually.

    Engineering

    • The engineering field can be broken down into aerospace, mechanical, agricultural, biomedical, chemical, civil and computer. Annual salaries in this field in the federal government range from $75,144 to $107,546. By 2016, the engineering industry is expected to grow by approximately 11 percent.

    Pilot

    • According to CNBC, pilots earn an annual salary of approximately $120,000.

    Warning

    • Be aware that while these salaries are the mean for the occupation, they comprise entry-level workers, who normally receive a lower salary, as well as those who have worked many years in their field.
