What Are Moissanite Rings?
Moissanite is an alternative to diamonds for engagement rings and other jewelry. White moissanite stones are almost colorless, with nearly 2 1/2 times the fire of real diamonds. Moissanite will never lose its brilliance and has both more fire and strength than cubic zirconia. Moissanite is a man-made gemstone and does not have the environment or social concerns of mined diamonds.

Discovery of Moissanite
-
Moissanite was discovered in 1893 in the Canyon Diablo meteor crater located in Arizona. Nobel Prize Winner Dr. Henri Moissan found the brilliant crystals in geological samples from the crater. The new mineral was identified as silicon carbide (SiC) and named "moissanite" in the French scientist's honor. While fiery and beautiful, the tiny crystals were too small to be set as jewelry.
Modern Day Moissanite
-
All currently available moissanite is manufactured and distributed worldwide by Charles & Covard Ltd. A patented thermal process is used to grow single crystal moissanite. The proprietary process does not allow for mass production. Charles & Covard Ltd. covers all of its moissanite with a lifetime guarantee on the fire and brilliance of the stone, and each stone is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

Care of Moissanite Rings
-
Moissanite is a very hard, durable stone. On the Mohs scale it has a hardness level of 9.25, compared to a natural diamond with a hardness level of 10. Care for a moissanite stone as you would a diamond, using a gem cleaner or mild detergent. Because of the hardness level, moissanite will resist scratches and abrasions and is ideal for someone with an active lifestyle.
