Jobs in the area of computer drafting are very technical and precise. However, drafting jobs are very flexible in the areas of advancement and expertise. Those thinking about a career in computer drafting have many options available to them.

    Education

  1. Proper training and education may be obtained in many ways. Community colleges and technical schools can offer the right training and students may obtain a degree or a certificate. Technical schools are best for intense technical and hands-on training while community colleges give technical training as well as a general education. For specialization and further training, a 4-year college will provide the right education.
  2. Employment

  3. Drafters have the ability to work in several different areas. Some of the most common industries that need drafters are architecture, engineering, manufacturing, construction, production and utilities.
  4. Duties

  5. A drafter will have several duties during their work week and the duties will depend on the specification and industry a drafter works in. Likely duties include research, computer and/or board drawings, consulting, calculations and budgeting.
  6. Salary

  7. The average starting pay for a drafter is about $30,000 a year. Between 5 and 10 years, a drafter can expect to make approximately $48,000. Those that have over 20 years of experience can make up to $60,000.
  8. Job Outlook

  9. The job outlook for drafters is less than average. By 2016, the number of drafting jobs is only expected to grow 6 percent.
