What Is Boswellia Used for?

Boswellia is a species of trees that is most recognized for creating a fragrance that is used to make frankincense. Herbalists use Boswellia for many medical purposes and it is a well recognized anti-inflammatory agent. In Ayurvedic medicine, Boswellia is popular in India for treating a number of health ailments.

  1. Frankincense

    • Frankincense

      Boswellia trees produce what is necessary to make frankincense. The barks of the trees are scraped and a resin is collected and allowed to dry and harden.

    Ayurvedic medicine

    • In Ayurvedic medicine, historically, Indian doctors have used Boswellia for a number of illnesses and conditions including diarrhea, ringworm, pulmonary diseases, arthritis and dysentery.

    Traditional Chinese Medicine

    • The Chinese have commonly used Boswellia in traditional Chinese medicine to help in the process of digestion. It is also commonly burned and said to help reduce stress and depression.

    Anti-Inflammatory Properties

    • Because of the anti-inflammatory properties in Boswellia, it is used today to ease several conditions that are inflammation-related, such as tendinitis, bursitis, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

    Boswellia Extracts

    • It has also been used for asthma and ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. Boswellia extracts have been used to help in the inflammation associated with certain brain tumors.
