Symptoms of Maize Allergies

Maize (commonly known as corn) is an increasingly common allergen. However, because there have been relatively few scientific studies on maize allergy, it is not a well-understood condition. Different individuals with maize allergies may each experience very different symptoms. If you think you are allergic to corn, talk to a doctor, who will perform testing to determine if you are truly allergic.

  1. Triggers

    • People who have a maize allergy will generally experience an allergic reaction after eating most maize-based products, such as corn chips and sodas made with corn syrup.

    Common Symptoms

    • If you have a maize allergy, you may experience hives, swelling, asthma symptoms, gastrointestinal problems, and itching or tingling in the mouth after coming in contact with corn-based products.

    Unusual Symptoms

    • More unusual symptoms of a maize allergy may include depression, tiredness, eczema, mood swings, difficulty concentrating, respiratory and sinus conditions, and trouble sleeping.

    Anaphylaxis

    • There are relatively few reported cases of anaphylaxis (a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction) resulting from maize allergy. Signs of anaphylaxis include trouble breathing and a swollen throat.

    Warning

    • People who have a true maize allergy should avoid corn and all its derivative products, (except for corn oil) including corn syrup and maltodextrin.

    Considerations

    • Because maize or corn derivatives are present in many commercially packaged foods, strict avoidance of all maize products can be very difficult for people with this allergy.
