Pros & Cons of Alternative Fuel Vehicles

Alternative fuel vehicles bypass fossil fuels by running on electricity, hydrogen, biodiesel and other renewable resources. They are a possible solution to rising gas prices, environmental degradation and the disruption of imported supplies by hostile foreign governments. However, there are several disadvantages of alternative fuel vehicles as well.

  1. Non-Polluting

    • Alternative fuel vehicles release little-to-no particulate matter into the air. Electric cars, for example, produce no pollution, while hydrogen-powered vehicles emit water from their tailpipes.

    Renewable

    • Because these vehicles use fuel that is either locally produced (as in bio-diesel) or renewable (as in hydrogen), such fuel will never run out, or be disrupted by foreign politics.

    Innovative

    • Alternative fuel vehicles use new materials, technology and methods, which produce innovative, unique and highly-desirable designs.

    High Cost

    • Because the technology is still developing and produced only at a small scale, these vehicles are expensive compared to traditionally-fueled cars.

    Lack of Infrastructure

    • The garages and depots needed to fuel and maintain alternative fuel vehicles do not exist, making it difficult to travel with such vehicles.
