What Is a T1 Line Used for?
A T1 line is an essential tool for businesses with large voice and data communication needs. Capable of carrying both types of traffic, a T1 is ideal for office deployment.
-
Data Capabilities
-
A T1 line is capable of carrying data traffic at speeds of up to 1.544 megabits per second (1.5MBps or 1,544KBps). This speed makes the T1 approximately 60 times faster than a standard dial-up modem, making it ideal for offices with large data bandwidth needs.
Voice Capabilities
-
A T1 line can carry 24 digitized voice channels. For this reason, T1 lines are ideal for call centers and other offices with many desktop telephone sets.
-
Leased T1 Lines
-
For data-intensive businesses where the data and bandwidth needs vary, such as Internet Service Provider companies, many service providers offer the option to lease T1 lines. When demand is high, an ISP can lease additional T1 lines to serve its customers. T1 lines can be channelized, with each connected ISP user being assigned a portion of the T1 bandwidth.
Variants
-
Businesses with needs that exceed 24 voice channels or 1.544MBps data speeds can purchase higher variants of the T1 that provide additional service. A T2 line is equivalent to four T1 lines. And a T3 is equivalent to 28 T1 lines. The European equivalent of a T1, the E1, offers similar capabilities.
Residential Use
-
T1 lines are typically used in business environments because they are somewhat expensive. Residential users can receive higher bandwidth data connections at a lower cost from Digital Subscriber Line or cable modem services. Residential users generally do not have a need for the numerous digital voice channels offered by T1 connections.
