A portable electric generator can be an extremely convenient item to have during power outages. It is also a vital piece of equipment when a power supply is required in a remote area, or a construction area where the main power has yet to be installed.

From Quick Guide: Electrical Parts Guide

    General Parts

  1. There are several parts of the generator that are very visible. The largest in size is the silencer cover, which is a formed piece of metal covering the top half of the generator. Other very visible items include the fuel tank and the shock absorption mat.
  2. Electric Panel

  3. The electrical panel is the control center of the generator. It includes the oil alert lamp, starter switch, hour meter, voltmeter and breaker mount.
  4. Generator Head Assembly

  5. This is the heart and soul of the generator. It includes the diode, the rotor unit, the stator, capacitor and the stator unit. These are the components that actually produce electrical power.
  6. Engine

  7. The engine is what is used to power the rotor and stator unit. The engine is fueled by either gasoline or diesel. In either case, it is piston driven. The engine is supplied by the fuel tank and has an air intake complete with an air filter system.
  8. Motherboard

  9. The motherboard is the brains of the generator. This circuit board controls and monitors the various elements of the generator. It connects the electrical panel with the engine and generating system. The mother board is supplied by a 12- or 24-volt power supply through a transformer within the generator housing.
