Information on Drug Rep Careers
Pharmaceutical sales representatives, commonly called drug reps, travel to different facilities and provide information about their company's products. The jobs can be very profitable--as well as providing perks including a company car--so competition is intense.
-
Function
-
Pharmaceutical sales representatives describe the benefits of medications and promote new ones to physicians, dentists, health services administrators, patient advocacy groups and anyone who can influence purchases.
Features
-
Rather than obtaining orders for medications from these people, a drug rep works to increase visibility and knowledge of the products, and to persuade physicians to prescribe them.
-
Time Considerations
-
Drug reps work long hours and spend much of their time on the road covering their territory. When not directly selling, they spend time attending meetings and conventions, and doing other networking activity.
Education and Experience
-
Most employers require new drug reps to have a minimum of a bachelor's degree or successful direct sales experience.
Knowledge Requirements
-
Pharmaceutical representatives must be very knowledgeable about their company's products, including statistics from clinical trials, and any controversies in the medical community about certain medications.
