- "I Spy" is a great way to practice colors and shapes. While you're trying to buy yourself time to get dressed, say, "I spy, with my little eye, something that is ... pink!" and watch your little angel help herself to your favorite pink strappy sandals.
- Flash cards are available for all skill levels, but for toddlers, try simple ones with pictures. Animals are fun, because not only can your son name the animal, he can make matching animal noises, too.
- Drawing with crayons is helpful for learning colors, but it also helps develop essential fine motor skills. As your child gets older, she will progress from scribbling to drawing straight lines and shapes, and even pictures (that she will enjoy explaining to you).
- While reading your child a story, ask him how many of something are on the page. For instance, see if he can point out all the trees, and count with him if he needs help. Some kids enjoy this so much, they start to count everything in sight!
- This game can be played with purpose-designed cards, but any deck of cards can be used. Lay out the cards face down, and take turns flipping over two to make matches. This is great for training a child's memory skills and attention span.
