Types of Stone Walls

Stone walls are durable, classic options for lining driveways and property borders. When selecting a design for a stone wall, some decisions must be made about the type of wall that will be built. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types

    • Stone walls can feature two styles of stone: rough or finished. In addition, stone walls also feature either a dry or mortared structure.

    Rough Stone

    • A rough stone is any stone utilized "as is." Rough stones are irregularly shaped and may show blemishes such as cracks, nicks and inclusions.

    Finished Stone

    • Finished stone has been put through a process of buffing, sanding and shaping. Even though the stones may vary in size, walls made from finished stones have a smooth, unified appearance, similar to the look of a brick wall.

    Dry Stone Walls

    • Of the two basic wall structures, dry stone walls are the easier to assemble, A dry stone wall is simply a stacking of rocks along the desired pathway. As rows are laid, gaps between them are covered by the rocks on the next row, and the resulting pressure between keeps the wall from shifting.

    Mortared Stone Walls

    • In a mortared wall, stone is sealed and bonded by the use of cement between each rock. This can be more labor-intensive, but can also be more durable as years wear on and the wall is exposed to the elements.
