Cushing's syndrome is caused by chronic high levels of cortisol in the body, either produced by the body or by taking cortisol-like medications such as prednisone. It can cause a host of problems, such as weight gain, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, infertility and decreased sex drive, among other issues.

This disease occurs when there is any over-production of growth hormones by the pituitary gland, which causes bones to grow at an abnormally fast rate. According to the Mayo Clinic, it usually affects middle-aged adults. It is also known as gigantism when it affects children (see Resources).
Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism (also known as an overactive thyroid), can occur as the result of an overproduction of the hormone thyroxine. Hyperthyroidism can cause problems such as rapid weight loss or gain, a rapid heart beat, tremors, nervousness, fatigue and goiters. It could also be an indication of another autoimmune condition, such as Grave's disease.
