History
-
The use of green bags became popular in the past ten years. It became widespread after the amount of disposable plastic bags began tripling the amount of garbage brought to landfills in the past decade. Consumers began bringing their own bags to do their shopping, and the popular grocery health food chain--Whole Foods--ceased the use of plastic bags. Since then, many cities have begun charging a tax on every plastic bag used in stores.
Types
-
Green bags are made from several different materials--including polyester, recycled plastic bottles, polypropylene, hemp, and canvas.
-
Location
-
Green bags are made in factories, like most other products that are mass-produced. Since many of these bags are produced with chemicals and gasses, they are produced in a different location than bags made of cotton or canvas would be made in.
Parts
-
Green bags consist of two parts: the base and a covered cardboard insert that allows the bag to keep its shape.
Material benefits
-
Most green bags are made from polypropylene, which is the most inexpensive material for companies to use. However, polypropylene is not biodegradable and may create problems in landfills. Canvas bags, however, are biodegradable and are extremely durable.
