A medical biller or coder is a very important person within a medical office. It is the responsibility of a medical biller to assign and interpret codes to different tests and procedures. This eases the transitions between a medical office and insurance companies.

    Education

  1. A career in medical billing and coding requires training through an accredited college. Some employers may only require a certificate, while others may expect a medical billing and coding associate's degree.
  2. Income

  3. Working in the medical billing field, an individual can expect to make between $12 and $16 an hour. The amount depends on years of experience, employer and duties.
  4. Hours

  5. Medical billers can expect to work a full 40 hours a week in a medical office. Some medical billers work from home, part time. This is becoming more common, as it saves a medical office some money.
  6. Typical Duties

  7. The duties for medical billers will vary depending on the employer and environment. Some of the typical duties may include: consulting with insurance companies and patients, interpreting and coding medical terms, keeping records, preparing invoices and compiling data.
  8. Job Outlook

  9. The job outlook for medical billers, like most healthcare professions, is good. Medical billing employment is expected to grow 14 percent by 2016.
  10. Positions

  11. In the medical billing field, there are many positions that an individual might hold. These can include: medical coding specialists, medical billing specialists, clerks, consultants and insurance agents.
