Forest Ranger Training

The occupation of "park ranger" encompasses many different types of occupations. Some park rangers work outdoors and help preserve natural environments, while others work in a historian's capacity at indoor museums. A forest ranger is a specialized type of park ranger, one who works primarily outdoors.

Function

Forest rangers are responsible for protecting property and ensuring conservation of federally preserved lands. They are also responsible for educating the public and anyone wishing to be a forest ranger must undergo training in both areas.

Identification

Training to become a forest ranger is taken through form training by the National Parks Service.

Geography

The majority of the training takes place at one of three locations: Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona; the Stephen T. Mather Training Center in Harpers Ferry, WV; and the Training Center at Brunswick, GA.

Time Frame

Training programs vary in length depending on location and time of year. They average between 10 to 13 weeks, with classes meeting Monday through Friday.

Considerations

Though not necessary to gain entry to formal training, a college degree will help further your career as a forest ranger. Experience in security and firearms is also helpful.
