What Tool is Used to Measure Force?

A dynamometer is used to calculate the force or power of a rotating object. There are several different types of dynamometers. They have a vivid history, many functions and specialized parts.

  1. History

    • Gaspard de Prony invented the first dynomometer in 1821. Advancements in dynamometer design and technology were subsequently made in 1877, 1928, 1931 and 1990 by Froude Hoffman, Carl Schenck, Martin and Anthony Winther and the company Factory Pro Dynamometer, respectively.

    Function

    • Dynamometer are used in determining torque and are an important part of engine testing for a variety of vehicles. They may also be used to calculate how much energy or suction is needed to operate a pump. Additionally, dynamometers are used in a variety of other industries, including manufacturing, ecology, engineering, construction and railway transportation.

    Basic Parts

    • The engine or item being tested is coupled to the dynamometer. The housing or body of the dynamometer is fixed by a barrel or trunnion to a non-movable surface. As the engine runs, its force powers the rotor inside the dynamometer to interact with the torque arm encased in the housing. The torque arm then is forced downward, its movements recorded by a scale, which in turn move the needle on the dial of the dynamometer, giving a measurement of the force.

    Types

    • There are many types of dynamometer, including hysteresis, electromagnetic brake, electric, hydraulic and friction. Within each type, there are also many subtypes, each specifically outfitted to measure a particular type of force in a particular setting.

    Considerations

    • A dynamometer is sometimes called a Dyno. A dynamometer should not be mistaken for a dynameter, which is used for measuring magnification of lenses.
