Facts on LED Lights

LED stands for light emitting diodes. LED lights were commonly used as decorations for Christmas trees in the past. They are now for everyday use in residences and businesses.

  1. History

    • Before 1993, you would need a combination of three bulbs to produce a white LED light. The three colored bulbs were red, green and blue.

    More History

    • LED lighting is not a recent discovery. The LED light bulb has been around since 1963. It was not common as a residential lighting option until the 21st century.

    Directional Lighting

    • LED lights are used by companies and individuals that want to have light directed at a specific location. They are more reliable than traditional lighting options for this purpose.

    Life

    • The life of an LED light bulb can be as long as 50,000 hours. This time frame is based on ideal conditions with the LED light bulb not being exposed to extreme heat or cold, or moisture.

    Poor Air Circulation

    • Poor air circulation can reduce in the life of an LED light. The bulb itself produces a small amount of heat, but it is enough to result in less-than optimal conditions for LED bulbs.

    Applications

    • LED lights have found a permanent home in Exit signs, traffic lights, store displays, and anywhere where colored light is needed. LED are energy efficient.
