Types of 501 C 3 Organizations
There are innumerable organizations that have been granted tax-exempt status under chapter 501(c)(3) of the United States tax code. Here's a brief rundown of the different flavors of these groups.

Charitable

Charitable organizations are those that are formed to do some type of public good.
Educational

Educational groups exist to foster an understanding of a specific issue.

Private Foundation

This type of group receives most of its funding from an endowment. The foundation generally exists to make contributions to other groups.
Deductions

Contributions to 501(c)(3) organizations are generally deductible from the donors' income tax obligation for the year in which the donation was made.
Restrictions

Some 501(c)(3) organizations cannot engage in any lobbying activity, and none can advocate for the election of a particular political candidate.
