Types of 501 C 3 Organizations

There are innumerable organizations that have been granted tax-exempt status under chapter 501(c)(3) of the United States tax code. Here's a brief rundown of the different flavors of these groups.

  1. Charitable

    • Charitable organizations are those that are formed to do some type of public good.

    Educational

    • Educational groups exist to foster an understanding of a specific issue.

    Private Foundation

    • This type of group receives most of its funding from an endowment. The foundation generally exists to make contributions to other groups.

    Deductions

    • Contributions to 501(c)(3) organizations are generally deductible from the donors' income tax obligation for the year in which the donation was made.

    Restrictions

    • Some 501(c)(3) organizations cannot engage in any lobbying activity, and none can advocate for the election of a particular political candidate.
