The Army employs more than 250,000 civilians on its bases and installations around the world, and it lays claim to being the Department of Defense's largest employer.

Civilians working on military installations enjoy a wide range of benefits, including health and life insurance; paid holidays, sick leave and vacation; bonuses; and paid employment-related training.

Spouses of military personnel can sometimes get preferential treatment in seeking a job on an installation when the spouse is stationed there. Also, former military service members will be considered for jobs on installations before applicants with no military service.
Contractors

There are a number of opportunities for civilian contractors to work on military bases, especially in technical fields such as engineering.

Jobs are also available in post exchanges and in commissaries, which are grocery stores serving military personnel.
