A generator is used to provide electricity to the living quarters of an RV. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to selecting a generator, but there are some steps that can be taken to determine the size necessary to accommodate a particular RV.

Size

RV generators are typically available in 3400, 4500, 5500, 6500, 7500, and 8500 watt sizes.

Considerations

To determine the size requirements for a generator, the RV owner should estimate what appliances and lights may be used at one time, determining the total of their wattages and using this as a guideline for the power of the generator selected.

Uses

If an RV owner wishes to have the generator also charge the battery for the living space as is available with some generator models, the owner may need to allow for additional wattage. Also, some RVs are wired to allow the generator to power the secondary air conditioner in the living space. If the RV has this feature, this may be another reason to allow for additional wattage.

Misconceptions

Some RV owners try to modify a generator to accelerate more quickly, thinking this will allow them to save money by purchasing a smaller generator and creating extra energy through acceleration. This practice does not work, and in fact, may damage the generator and anything hooked into it.
