Chisels
-
A chisel is a cutting tool used to break away large pieces of wood. Chisels feature a rectangular medal blade that are straight or V-shaped, mounted on a handle made of wood, metal or plastic.
Gouges
-
Like a chisel, a gouge is used to break away wood, but it is primarily used for smaller, more detailed shaping. A gouge resembles a chisel, except its blade is much thinner. There are many variations of gouges available for woodworkers to allow for a multitude of shapes to be cut into the wood.

Knives
-
Some wood carvers practice whittling, which is shaping wood with a knife. Wood-caving knives typically feature a slightly curved blade with a notch or groove below to accommodate shavings.
Hammers and Mallets
-
Hammers and mallets are also used by wood carvers to pound out imperfections or further shape designs. Hammers and mallets typically feature wooden handles and wooden, rubber or metal heads.
Stamps
-
Stamps are used to create designs and patterns in the surface of wood. Stamps are metal cylinders with a specifically shaped head that can be used to strike wood with, imparting its shape into its surface.
Rolls
-
A wood carver's roll is an oval-shaped piece of fabric with pockets designed for individual tools to be slid into. When the rolls is filled, it is literally rolled up and tied to store the tools and keep them dry and clean.
