What Is a Copyright Release?

When you work hard to produce an original piece of work, such as a book or a film, you need to have it copyrighted with the U.S. Copyright Office. When others like what you've done, they may want to use the work (or parts of it) for their own purposes. This is when you will need a copyright release.

  1. Identification

    • A copyright release is a document stating that someone is allowed to use copyrighted material. It must be signed by the copyright owner.

    Considerations

    • A proper copyright release will contain the names of both parties, name of work, date, and the place where the copyrighted work will be reprinted or reused.

    Copy Shops

    • Kinkos, Staples and other companies usually require you to come prepared with a copyright release if you want to make a copy of a photograph or book.

    Infringement

    • You are infringing on someone's rights if you use that person's copyrighted works for your own benefit without permission and/or proper credit.

    Warning

    • A business or individual can be sued under U.S. copyright law if there is a suspicion of blatant copyright infringement.
