What Is a Wattmeter?

Electricity can be a powerful thing, but too much of it can overload systems and cause trouble. It's the job of a wattmeter to observe and report on electrical power. This is a very important job and one that shouldn't be taken for granted. Learn what a wattmeter is, how it works, and how it benefits an electrical circuit. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • Wattmeters are set into an electrical device or near a circuit. They have a face that displays power levels and a pointer that helps viewers read the power level it picks up.

    Internal Components

    • Wattmeters are composed of internal coils that read both the power levels of the current flowing through them and the potential current power.

    Measurements

    • Wattmeters measure electrical currents in three different values. These are watts, volts and amperes.

    Modern Wattmeters

    • Modern wattmeters are completely digital and able to read a sample of an electrical current thousands of times per second in order to display an accurate measurement on an LCD screen.

    Warning

    • Wattmeters can threaten to overheat if the current they are reading is too powerful, In order to keep this from happening, take a careful look at the readings to make sure they are not in the indicated danger zone.

    Benefits

    • One of the biggest benefits of a wattmeter is that it allows a person to see what appliances or devices are using up the most electricity in a home in order to cut back on wasted energy.
