Where Do I Cash in an EE Savings Bond?

An EE Savings Bond is a type of security available through the U.S. government. It can be cashed in at a variety of locations, allowing bond owners some choice.

  1. Federal Reserve Bank

    • You may cash in bonds at a branch of the Federal Reserve. Federal Reserve banks are located in San Francisco, Boston, Cleveland, New York, Philadelphia, Richmond, Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Kansas City and Dallas.

    Banks

    • The financial institution where you hold your checking or savings account is another option for cashing in an EE bond. Sometimes banks will cash bonds for nonclients but may place a limit on the dollar amount they are willing to cash at one time.

    Other Financial Institutions

    • Some credit unions and savings-and-loan organizations will cash bonds for noncustomers for free or a nominal fee.

    Online

    • Bonds can be cashed online through the Treasury Direct website (see Resources).

    Considerations

    • Proper photo identification must be presented to cash a savings bond. Call the financial institution first to see if it has any additional requirements.
