History of Puma Knives

Puma-Werk of Solingen, Germany, originated in the water-powered mill workshop of Johann Wilhelm Lauterjung on the banks of the Wupper River. Lauterjung registered his first trademark with the Solingen Master Cutlers Guild in 1769.

      With the advent of steam power, great grandson Nathaniel Lauterjung moved the family business to the town of Solingen in 1855. By 1920 Puma marketed hunting knives world wide.

    Puma Classics

      Returning to civilian production after WWII, by 1953 Puma produced several of its best known knives, machetes and hunting spears under the guidance of Oswald von Frankenberg and Ludwigsdorf, husband of Renate Lauterjung. General Manager Renate sold the company to another Solingen family, the Hindrichs, in 1991.

      In that same year, manager Harald Lauer led Puma-Werk toward a blend of modern technology and traditional hand craftsmanship. Automated and laser based production methods added to the company's production capability and high standards.

    Puma I-P

      New owner Heiner Hiepass-Aryus expanded Puma facilities in 1998, soon creating a new product line manufactured in Spain. The international branch of the company began production of Puma I-P Knives in 2003.

    Puma TEC

    • Puma's newest knives combine modern innovations and styles with traditional old world craftsmanship. Puma TEC folding knives and fixed blades were introduced to the world marketplace in 2008.
