Glutamine Powder Side Effects

Glutamine is a type of amino acid. It is sometimes taken in powder form by bodybuilders in the hopes of adding additional muscle and bulk. There are some side effects that prospective users should be aware of before taking glutamine.

  1. Severe Side Effects

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, glutamine powder can cause chills, dizziness or lightheadedness, fainting, fever, severe headaches, rapid heartbeat, puffiness of the face or tongue, severe stomach pain, hives, tightness in the chest or wheezing. These can be signs of a serious reaction to glumatime and require prompt medical attention.

    Urinary Complication

    • Glutamine powder can cause difficulty in urinating, a sudden decrease of urine production, painful frequent urination or pain in the lower back where the kidneys are located. The Mayo Clinic categorizes these as warning signs and urges those experiencing them to seek emergency medical care.

    Common Mild Side Effects

    • People taking glutamine may experience coughing, hoarseness of the throat and the frequent urge to defecate accompanied by straining.

    Minor Side Effects

    • Minor side effects that are not life threatening can also occur from taking glutamine. These include back pain, body aches, stiffness, muscle aches and pains, breast pain, lack of appetite, indigestion, vomiting of food or blood, nausea, stomach bloat, flatulence, gas, rectal bleeding, constipation or blood in stools, pale colored stools, swelling around the anus, diarrhea, painful or dark urine, congestion, dry or sore throat and a runny nose.

    Additional Side Effects

    • Other side effects may occur from taking glutamine. The Mayo Clinic reports changes in skin color such as yellowing, cold hands and feet, decreased touch sensation, aggravated symptoms in patients with Crohn's disease, difficulty in moving, feelings of discouragement or sadness, discoloration of the fingernails or toenails, hearing problems, joint pain, irritability, lack of sex drive, rash, change in vaginal discharge, joint pain, sleeplessness, sunken eyes, sweating, swelling, thirst, trouble concentrating, bad breath, tiredness and voice changes.
