What Do You Need to Sell Life Insurance?

Life insurance sales can be one of the most rewarding jobs both in financial terms and emotional ones. The first time you deliver a death claim to a worried widow--and realize what a service you did for the family--you'll believe in the product more than you ever did. You need several things to sell life insurance.

  1. Education

    • Most states require you take classes before you test for a life insurance license. Even if the state doesn't require it, the test is difficult, and you need some form of study material.

    Test

    • You need to take a test on life insurance and pass it in order to obtain a license in all states. If you have a license in one state, other states usually issue a reciprocal license.

    License

    • Once you pass the test, you apply for the license. There are normally several fees involved.

    Clean History

    • States often require a finger print card and criminal background check. If you have a history of criminal charges, you may not get a license. It depends on the charges, time frames and other circumstances.

    Financial Strength

    • Most states look at your credit history and whether you misuse your credit. Those that have a history of bankruptcy, bad credit or outstanding judgments may not get a license in some states.

    Contracts

    • Before you sell a company's products, you need acceptance by the company and a contract with it or a general agent selling for the company.
