What Is an Occupational Therapist Assistant?

As a certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA), you have the opportunity to be employed in many different areas and locations. All people who work in this field help their clients to improve their quality of life. All COTAs work under supervision of a registered occupational therapist.

  1. Rehabilitation

    • As a COTA in the rehabilitation department, you will help people to regain body function lost due to an accident, a disease or because of some type of surgery. COTAs help their clients to live with their limitations, whether they are temporary or permanent.

    School Jobs

    • COTAs who work in schools help students of all ages with various learning problems to become skilled at tasks such as reading, writing or grooming.

    Developmental Disabilities

    • COTAs may be involved with a sheltered workshop or other employment opportunities for those with mental retardation. Here, they teach usable skills and leisure activities.

    Activities Director

    • An activities director designs programs to keep an elder person's body and mind as active as possible. Most often the people the activities director serves are in a nursing home, assisted living facility or adult daycare.

    Mental Health

    • COTAs work with individuals who have mental illness and challenging behaviors in a number of different settings They help these people to cope with all aspects of life.
