Adult Day Care Regulations

Adult day care centers are places for the elderly or ill where they have the chance to spend a few hours each day with others of the same age. Children and caretakers take pride in knowing that the individual will be cared for and safe. All of these centers are subject to state and local laws.

  1. Licensure

    • All adult day cares are required to have a license from the state where they're located. In addition--in some states like California and Kentucky--the center is required to have both a license and a certificate.

    Required Services

    • For a center to use the title adult day care, it must offer certain types of services. These include nursing services, physical therapy, health monitoring, and transportation.

    Staffing Regulations

    • The staff at each center is also regulated by the state. Most states require one experienced staff member for every four patients. However, some states like Alabama require one staff member for every ten patients.

    Staff Training

    • The individuals working for the adult day care are also regulated. They must continue their education while under employment by taking courses and seminars in their given fields--such as administration or nursing.

    Local Regulations

    • Adult day care centers are also regulated by certain local rules. These vary and not all states use local regulations, but Ohio and California are two states that do.
