What Are the Causes of Unexplained Anxiety?

Most people will experience some anxiety during stressful events, such as a job interview or loss of a job. However, having frequent, severe or unexplained anxiety may negatively impact the ability to care for self and family. According to the Mayo Clinic and the National Library of Medicine, causes of unexplained anxiety include stress and family history.

Family

Frequent disagreements with family or having a family member with legal, medical or health problems may be a source of anxiety.

Illness

Having a serious illness, enduring a problematic pregnancy or complicated childbirth may cause unexplained anxiety that can lead to clinical depression.

Money

Loss of control over finances or a large amount of debt may be a cause of unexplained anxiety.

Personality

Lack of a positive social support system or an inability to cope well with stress can lead to free floating anxiety; indeed, some personalities may simply be prone to greater anxiety than others.

Trauma

Experiencing trauma, such as domestic violence or the loss of a parent during childhood, can lead to unexplained anxiety for long periods of time.

Work

A job can be a cause of unexplained anxiety, especially if bad relationships with bosses or coworkers exist, or if it entails long hours and low pay.
