Types of Waterproof Fabrics

While there are many types of waterproof fabric, from treated leather to modern plastics, they all work off the same principle. The surface membrane of the fabric is tight enough that the water cannot pass through it, and can't get to the wearer's skin.

  1. Oilskin

    • Oilskin is fabric that has been treated with oil to make it waterproof. This is one of the oldest forms of waterproof fabric.

    Vinyl

    • Vinyl, when used to make clothing or covers, is completely waterproof. Covers made from vinyl always have a shiny finish and come in a huge variety of colors.

    Rubber

    • The first modern raincoats, made in Britain in 1836, were made using a process that combined rubber and fabric. This is still a common material to keep rain off of people and their property.

    Gabardine

    • First used to make trench coats, gabardine is a a yarn-dyed, fine cotton twill which is chemically treated to repel rain. This is still a popular, lightweight fabric for use in longer coats today.

    Gore-Tex

    • One of the more popular, modern fabrics, Gore-Tex is used in a variety of boots, clothes and tarps. The material is a base of artificial fibers, which are coated with plastics that repel water.
