What Is a BiPAP Machine Used for?
BiPAP, or bi-level positive airway machines, are one of two choices of breathing machines that are commonly used to treat respiratory ailments such as sleep apnea.
-
Function
-
BiPAP machines work by pushing oxygen through a tube into a mask worn over your nose or mouth or both. The air pressure increases on inhalation and decreases on exhalation.
Types
-
A BiPAP machine would be used if you have shortness of breath or a hard time exhaling against the air pressure pumped into your mask.
-
Effects
-
A BiPAP machine will also trigger your diaphragm to discharge, making it easier for you to breathe.
Considerations
-
Some BIPAP machines come with humidifiers to dampen the oxygen pumped into your nose and mouth. This will alleviate any dryness that can accompany the machine's use. They can also come equipped with a "ramp" feature, which automatically increases the air pressure to the prescribed amount over a set period of time.
Warning
-
BiPAP machines can only be acquired through a prescription. A sleep study in a hospital is usually required for diagnosis of conditions that require the machine.
