What Is a PCMCIA Card?

In the early 1990s, computer expandability was largely the domain of the desktop unit. Those who purchased laptops had few if any options for adding additional hardware or enhancing their capabilities. However, that all changed with the introduction of the PCMCIA card.

    • PCMCIA stands for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association. The PCMCIA is the governing body that promotes and defines PC card standards.

    History

    • The first PCMCIA card was created in 1991.

    Uses

    • PCMCIA card format is by devices that expand the functionality of notebook computers. Devices such as network cards, additional memory and WiFi cards are all available in PCMCIA format.

    Size

    • PCMCIA cards have the approximate overall dimensions of a credit card. As defined by the standards, all PCMCIA cards are 5.6 mm long and 54.0 mm wide and have two rows containing 68 pins each.

    Variations

    • The original PCMCIA card led to the development of the ExpressCard, CompactFlash and SmartMedia cards, all of which, while being based on original PC card technology, offered various improvements along with reduced size.

    The Future

    • The need for expansion cards such as PCMCIA has been all but eradicated by the introduction of USB and FireWire devices. However, later variations of the original card, namely the ExpressCard, continue to have niche consumer and professional applications.
