Hard Drive Noise Symptoms
As with all mechanical devices, hard drives have a limited lifespan. Abnormal hard drive noise can be one of the first signs of impending hard disc failure. By paying attention to the sounds computer hardware makes, important data can be saved that would otherwise be lost due to disc failure.
-
Types
-
Though hard drives do make sound as part of their normal operation, there are certain noises which are symptoms of failure; loud clicking and/or squealing is a sign of a mechanical abnormality.
Time Frame
-
From the first abnormal sounds to complete disc failure can be either a matter of hours or a matter of months; simply because your drive is presenting troubling signs does not mean failure is imminent.
-
Considerations
-
Creating a back up at the first sound of hard drive noise is a good idea. With your data backed up, you can run disk diagnostics to identify the problem.
Prevention/Solution
-
Keeping your drives properly defragmented and operating within their thermal specifications is key. Heat is the natural enemy of all electronics; allowing a hard drive to overheat may induce early mechanical failure.
Warning
-
If you suspect your drive is making abnormal noises, back up all data immediately and run diagnostic software; otherwise important data may be lost.
