What Causes Household Dust?

Dust is a pervasive nuisance in many homes. Even when windows are kept shut, dust will appear on surfaces eventually. Dust on wood furniture is easily seen and easily dealt with, but dust on bedding is also common, although not as noticeable nor as easy to clean. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Features

    • Household dust is largely comprised of human skin cells, animal dander and dust mite excrement.

    Causes

    • Human beings constantly shed skin cells. Animals in the home shed dander into the environment as well. Dust mites that thrive on a person's dead skin cells leave excrement. All of these fine particles, including any airborne particles that come in from outdoors, are easily stirred by movement and settle on surfaces.

    Dangers

    • Many people develop an allergy to components in dust. Most of these allergic reactions are not severe, but they can be--particularly for asthmatics.

    Control

    • You can control dust in the home by keeping your home extra clean. Wash bedding frequently in hot soapy water--it can help cut down on dust mites. Vacuum carpeting. Wipe down all surfaces often.

    Warning

    • If you are allergic, ask someone else to clean the home or always wear a dust mask when cleaning. Consider getting hardwood or tile floors, which can be more easily cleaned than carpeting.
