Stroke Symptoms - Tongue

Many people may recognize the more common symptoms of a stroke, such as slurred speech or paralysis of one side of the body. But there are less common side effects of a stroke, such as unusual tongue symptoms.

  1. Dysarthia

    • Dysarthia involves loss of muscle coordination. It can cause a weakness of the tongue muscle, which may result in slurred speech.

    Dysphagia

    • This is a complication resulting from the inability to swallow, where the tongue becomes disabled due to muscular failure.

    Lacunar Stroke

    • A lacunar stroke (where the arteries to the brain become obstructed) can sometimes result in a person's tongue becoming slack (see Resources).

    Ataxia

    • Speech may become difficult during or after a stroke.

    Warnings

    • If you notice that someone is suddenly having difficulty speaking, or their speech is slurred, get help immediately.
