Beans are very easy to start from seeds. You can start growing them indoors, in pots or directly in the ground. Beans sprout quickly, usually within three days of being planted. There are several varieties of beans, so you will never get bored from lack of variety. Fresh beans make great snack and bring a healthy dish to the dinner table. They're the perfect plant for the beginning gardener.

    Black-eyed peas

  1. Black-eyed peas are a favorite in the Southern states. They're rich in potassium and fiber, and taste great mixed in green and a little vinegar.
  2. Garbanzo beans

  3. Garbanzo beans (also known as chickpeas) are used in many different dishes. They make a great hummus, and taste great tossed in salad greens.
  4. Lima beans

  5. Lima beans are an excellent source of vitamin A, and have a distinctive flavor not like any other bean. Lima beans taste great tossed with butter and a little chili powder.
  6. Pinto beans

  7. Pinto beans are the most popular bean in Latin America. They are rich in calcium and fiber, and taste great in soup.
  8. Planting

  9. Beans should be planted in multiples, such as three seeds per hole. Cover them with a thin layer of peat moss for the best protection.
  10. Rows

  11. Plant beans in same-specie rows, but if planting on a hill then plant bean seeds in a circle. Provide poles or specialized bean fencing to allow ample growth.
