Symptoms of the Early Stages of Shingles

Shigles, or herpes zoster, is a painful rash caused by a viral infection. The varicelle-zoster virus is the same virus that causes the chickenpox rash. Individuals who have ever had chickenpox still have the dormant virus in their body which can later cause shingles.

  1. Unexplained Pain

    • Individuals with shingles may feel unexplained pain, tingling, burning or even numbness on various parts of their body.

    Rash

    • Shingles will first cause pain, but within a few days an itchy rash will begin to show up, usually on just one side of the torso. The rash may also appear on the neck or face. The afflicted individual may also have blisters that are filled with fluid. The blisters may pop and become crusty.

    Headache

    • Individuals with shingles may experience headaches during the illness.

    Fever

    • Shingles may cause fever and possible chills as well.

    Stomach Trouble

    • Individuals with shingles may have stomach pain or an upset stomach.
