Diabetic Shock Symptoms

A dangerous short-term side effect of diabetes is called diabetic shock. Also commonly called "hypoglycemic shock" and "insulin shock," diabetic shock is the result of an excessive drop in blood sugar due to too much insulin. Not all diabetic patients will exhibit all symptoms, so even one symptom of insulin shock should be taken seriously.

  1. Loss of Consciousness

    • Fainting or any other sudden loss of consciousness in a diabetes sufferer is a clear-cut indication of diabetic shock.

    Irritability

    • A sudden short temper or excessive, unexplained irritability can indicate an emerging condition of insulin shock.

    Hunger

    • Another common symptom of diabetic shock is the sudden onset of extreme hunger.

    Pallor

    • Diabetic shock often causes the skin to become suddenly pale. This loss of skin color is usually accompanied by clamminess.

    Cardiovascular Changes

    • Rapid heartbeat and a fast pulse frequently accompany insulin shock.

    Shakiness and/or Loss of Coordination

    • Muscle tremors or overall trembling is one of the major symptoms of diabetic shock. Falling, tripping, lack of fine motor skills and general clumsiness are also common diabetic shock symptoms.
