What Causes Fingernail Fungus?

Fungal infections of the nails, which are also called onychomycosis, are more common on the toes but can occur on the fingers as well. The growth of fungus on your fingernails may be unattractive and cause your nails to become yellow, thick and flaky. According to the National Library of Medicine and the American Academy of Dermatology, causes of fingernail fungus include immune system disorders and injuries to your hands.

  1. Family History

    • If your parents or siblings have fungus on their fingers or toes, you may develop this also due to a genetic susceptibility.

    Immune Disorders

    • You may get fingernail fungus if your immune system is weakened by conditions such as AIDS, diabetes, lupus or pregnancy.

    Injuries

    • Injuries to the area around your fingernails can cause fingernail fungus as a result of the fingernail separating from your nail bed.

    Irritations

    • Being exposed to chemicals or other products that irritate the skin of your hands can cause small openings between your skin and nails where fungus can grow.

    Moisture

    • Washing your hands without drying them or frequently wearing latex or vinyl gloves may cause moisture to build up and allow the growth of nail fungus.

    Skin Disorders

    • Disorders of your skin, such as eczema or psoriasis, can create openings for fungus to grow on and around your nails.
