Difference Between King & California King Mattresses

There are so many bed sizes available today, that it can be a little bit confusing to decide which is the right choice for you. Twin, full, double, queen, king and California king are the main sizes of bed in today's market. Most people are familiar with the king size bed as the biggest size of bed, but may be confused when they hear the term "California king." What, if any, are the differences between the king size bed and the California king size bed?

The Difference

The main difference between the two distinct types of bed, king and California king, is the size.

King Bed

King size beds are the widest available beds and measure 76 inches wide by 80 inches long.

California King

California king size beds are the longest available bed, but are narrower than a standard king size, measuring 72 inches wide by 84 inches long. These beds are the best choice for taller people, particularly those taller than 6 feet.

Terminology

The difference in terminology is the other major difference between the two bed sizes. While a standard king bed may be referred to as a traditional, standard or eastern king size bed, the California king is also commonly called a western king bed.

Sheets

A homeowner should be particularly aware of the difference between king and California king size beds when buying sheets. Sheet sets are particularly made and are clearly identified on the packaging as either standard or California king size.
