Side Effects of an Endometrial Biopsy

An endometrial biopsy is essentially a procedure used to evaluate the health of the uterine endometrium. It is often performed on women when dealing with either perimenopause or postmenopausal symptoms. As with any type of procedure, endometrial biopsy is not without some risks, though most are fairly minimal. When you go through an endometrial biopsy, you can suffer certain side effects from the procedure.

  1. Cramping

    • One of the most common side effects from an endometrial biopsy is a certain amount of cramping. Most of the time, the cramping will cease soon after the procedure has been performed.

    Spasm

    • You may also notice uterine spasms. Much like the cramping, this should subside soon after the procedure has been performed.

    Dizziness

    • Some women experience slight dizziness or light-headedness from the procedure.

    Fainting

    • Another possible side effect that some women suffer is periodic episodes of fainting. This is considered a vasovagal reaction to the procedure, due to a slight slowing of the heart.

    Bleeding

    • On occasion, an endometrial biopsy may cause some level of uterine bleeding.
