Equipment Used for a Gymnastic Balance Beam
The balance beam is one of four apparatus women and girls compete on in gymnastics competitions. The International Federation of Gymnastics governs the sport and sets the rules for competition on the balance beam. Scoring is based on the Code of Points and consists of deductions taken for any errors in the routine.

The Balance Beam

The balance beam itself must meet certain standards that have been set by the International Federation of Gymnastics. It must be 49 inches high, 196 inches long and 4 inches wide.
Shoes

Gymnasts can perform on the balance beam barefoot or wearing special shoes designed especially for the beam.

Chalk

Chalk or resin can be applied to the hands and/or feet before the start of a routine.
Springboard

A springboard can be used to mount the balance beam if a routine necessitates it.
Timer

A scoreboard timer is visible to gymnasts competing on the beam so they can monitor the the duration of their routine, which should be completed under 90 seconds.
