Fishing Line Facts

Fishing line comes in a variety of different types and strengths. It is made out of many different kinds of material, and has changed drastically over time.

  1. Early Fishing Line

    • Fishing line was originally made out of plant stalks. It has also been made out of silk and horse hair in the past. Linen and cotton lines were popular during the 1800s.

    Mass Production

    • It was not until the 1850s that fishing line was produced on a mass scale. Until that time, most fishermen made their own line, or it was produced by small businesses.

    Modern Fishing Line

    • Modern fishing line is made of artificial products. Very rarely is fishing line made with any natural material.

    PVC

    • The waterproof plastic around a fly line is often made of PVC.

    Air Bubbles

    • Most fly fishing lines have small air bubbles inside of the plastic outer coat. This is what makes fly lines buoyant.
